In February 1936, Dr. Ferdinand Porsche presented his first prototype of the "People's Car", which was to become the basis for the Volkswagen Beetle. However, with the outbreak of World War II, all Volkswagen production was immediately reoriented to military production. In January 1938, the German Defense Forces presented specifications for a military version of this practical car. In November of the same year, the prototype was completed and it received the official designation Pkw. K1 "Kubelwagen" Type 82. The car had a lightweight but robust monocoque construction with a folding canvas top.
