In order to quickly build temporary runways, the US engineering services built different versions of the airfield. M8A1 Airfield Steel Plates were used during the Vietnam War in the late 1960s and early 1970s and were installed by US Army Engineer units. The plates were connected to each other in a staggered order or in a row and allowed to build both individual small platforms and large airfields. Most often, such coatings were used in military aviation. Various aircraft could be based on the sites created in this way, for example, AN-1Q Cobra combat helicopters, light attack aircraft, OV-10A Bronco or O-2 Skymaster reconnaissance aircraft. The well-known B-26K Counter Invader was also operated at such sites.
