The Gripen multi-role fighter was created starting in the mid-1980s for the defense of Sweden - there was a need for a new generation fighter, created at a qualitatively new level, which could simultaneously be an interceptor, reconnaissance and attack aircraft. The concept of the fighter initially included flexibility: the new fighter had to be able to operate from poorly prepared airfields and have a short takeoff, be convenient and easy to maintain, have a high time between failures of elements and be maximally optimized for combat operations in Swedish conditions.
