The Tornado was the result of a joint project between Italy, Germany and Great Britain to create a multi-role, high-performance combat aircraft. However, the main requirement was the development of a "state-of-the-art" modern aircraft capable of performing low-altitude penetrating strike missions. This need was met by the development of a twin-engine combat aircraft with variable sweep wings.
